This past Saturday evening, April 26, 2026, our community gathered in the church sanctuary for a meaningful Armenian Genocide Commemoration, marking the 111th anniversary with prayer, reflection, and fellowship. During the service, each attendee was given a white carnation to place beneath the beautiful image of our Holy Martyrs of the Armenian Genocide, creating a moving tribute of remembrance. The evening began with a prayer service led by Fr. Nareg, bringing parishioners together in unity and reflection.

Following the service, attendees were invited to a special screening of The Melody of Armenia, a 1930s silent documentary rediscovered and restored by ARF Archive Director George Aghjanian. Introduced by U. Isabel Hagobian, the presentation highlighted the remarkable efforts behind preserving this six-reel film, which offers a moving portrayal of a mother and son who survived the genocide and rebuilt their lives in Paris. Featuring newly restored footage and a modern score, the film beautifully captures the resilience and cultural renewal of the Armenian diaspora in the 1920s.

Mr. Aghjanian also shared insights into the ongoing work of the ARF Archives, emphasizing the importance of organizing and digitizing historical materials for future generations and researchers. The presentation concluded with an engaging Q&A session, after which Fr. Nareg offered closing reflections on the film, emphasizing the important theme that one must know where they come from in order to understand where they are going. He spoke on the vital role of preserving our archives as a means of informing our present-day Armenian identity and guiding our collective mission forward.

The evening concluded with fellowship and refreshments graciously prepared by the ARS “Erebouni” and “Mayr” Chapters.

Hosted collaboratively by the ARF NY “Armen Garo” Gomideh, ARS "Erebouni" and "Mayr" Chapters, and St. Sarkis Church, the event was a great success. Proceeds raised will support the continued preservation of our rich Armenian heritage through the ARF Archives.
