In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus heals a man who is deaf and unable to speak, declaring the powerful words: “Be opened.” While modern medicine can address many forms of physical deafness, this miracle invites us to examine another condition that can be harder to recognize: spiritual deafness. In this homily, Fr. Nareg reflects on three questions that can help us recognize whether we are truly listening: 1. Are we listening to God? The Word of God does not always tell us what we want to hear. Sometimes it confronts us, challenges us, and calls us to change. Yet, as St. Paul reminds the Corinthians, that discomfort can produce genuine repentance and spiritual growth. 2. Who are we listening to? We live in a world overflowing with information, opinions, influencers, and advice. But not every voice deserves our trust. We need people in our lives who genuinely care for us, people willing to tell us the truth and, when life becomes difficult, remain beside us and walk with us. 3. What are we telling ourselves? The stories we repeatedly tell ourselves can either help us grow or keep us trapped. Narratives of permanent victimhood, resentment, blame, or certainty that everyone else is wrong can prevent us from seeing ourselves and others clearly. Ultimately, Christ’s words to the deaf man become a prayer for each of us: “Be opened.”
