The Journey Begins: The First Sunday of Advent – November 23
Dear Faithful of St. Sarkis Church,
This coming Sunday, November 23, marks the first Sunday of Advent in the Armenian Apostolic Church. This is a significant spiritual season that invites us to prepare our hearts and minds for the Holy Feast of the Nativity. Advent is not merely a countdown to Christmas; it is a six-week pilgrimage of the soul. During this sacred period, the Gospel readings guide us step by step to encounter the incarnate Jesus Christ with renewed faith, clarity, and spiritual maturity.
Advent is a time of self-reflection, renewal, and generosity of spirit. The Church, through its appointed Gospel passages, encourages each of us to search our hearts honestly, confront what holds us back, and cultivate the virtues that bring us closer to God and one another.
I warmly encourage you to engage with each Advent week intentionally and personally. Allow the Gospel message to speak directly to your life, your circumstances, and your spiritual aspirations. Each theme gives us a valuable opportunity to realign ourselves with Christ and strengthen the foundations of our faith.
Advent Week 1
“Fight Against Greed”
Gospel: Luke 12:13-31
Jesus reminds us that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. True richness is found in trust, contentment, and generosity.
Advent Week 2
“Repent”
Gospel: Luke 13:1-9
A call to renewal and transformation. Repentance is not shame; it is hope, growth, and a new beginning.
Advent Week 3
“Be Charitable”
Gospel: Luke 14:12-24
Christ teaches us to give without expecting anything in return, mirroring God’s unconditional love.
Advent Week 4
“Be Forgiving”
Gospel: Luke 17:1-10
Forgiveness frees both the giver and the receiver. It heals wounds and restores relationships.
Advent Week 5
“Be Humble”
Gospel: Luke 18:9-14
Humility opens the soul to God’s grace. The humble heart is the birthplace of Christ.
Advent Week 6
“Invest Your Talents”
Gospel: Luke 19:12-28
We are called to use our God-given gifts, not bury them. Offer your time, abilities, and compassion in service to God and neighbor.
As we enter Advent together, let us embrace the spiritual richness of these weeks. May the Gospel readings inspire us, challenge us, and ultimately prepare us to greet on January 6, the newborn Christ with hearts full of light, faith, and love.
With blessings,
Fr. Nareg Terterian
