The Transformative Power of Music and Prayer in Personal Growth - Friday, December 6, 2024

Slideshow image

An article published in The Atlantic a few days ago titled “It’s Never Too Late to Learn an Instrument” caught my attention. This article highlights the cognitive, emotional, and social benefits of playing a musical instrument, even later in life. The article explores how learning and playing a musical instrument enhances mental and emotional well-being at any age. It underscores the benefits of brain plasticity, stress reduction, emotional resilience, and its potential to create social bonds and instill a sense of accomplishment. Despite common concerns like lack of time or talent, the piece argues that the personal growth and joy from engaging with music outweigh these hurdles. It encourages embracing music-making as a life-enriching practice.

Paintball Outing For Altar Servers

Paintball Outing For Altar Servers

Reported by Mr. Razmik Nenejian

Last Saturday, the altar servers went paintball shooting in Calverton NY. There were about 20 young adults, a few deacons, and our beloved Der Nareg, who participated to show his support. The cold weather did not stop the boys from having a great time and an exciting day with their friends. The atmosphere was filled with joy and laughter! Of course, they all attended church the following day to ask for forgiveness for taking aim at Der Hayr.  After the event we all met at a nearby eatery to have a bite and talk about the fun memories we all created as a St. Sarkis family.
Der Nareg and the board of trustees were generous enough to cover the cost of this event as a token of appreciation in hopes that they will be the next generation to take St. Sarkis Church to the next level.

Armenian Youth Foundation Supports Our School

Slideshow image

Dear Parents,

The Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School of St. Sarkis Church is excited to announce that we have been awarded a $10,500 grant from the Armenian Youth Foundation (AYF) for the school’s capital improvements.

The Foundation’s mission is to preserve Armenian heritage by proudly supporting various youth programs. Since 1973, it has awarded over $780,000 in grants to over 20 organizations and Armenian schools. Visit ArmenianYouthFoundation.org to learn more about the Foundation's impact on our community and how you can support it.

With this grant award, we completed much-needed capital improvements to the school facilities, including installing new flooring, painting the walls, and purchasing new window blinds. The construction efforts were completed in time for the launch of the new school year in September. We have already seen the positive impact of these improvements in fostering a more inspiring learning environment.

We are very appreciative of the Armenian Youth Foundation's support of our mission. I also extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our parents, staff, and volunteers for entrusting us with the privilege of providing a productive and nurturing Armenian educational experience for your children. Thanks to your support, enrollment in our Saturday School, Parent & Me, and post-graduate Armenian studies programs has doubled from prior years. I am committed to working with each of you to ensure we provide an exceptional experience for our children.

With gratitude,

Yn. Annie Terterian, School Principal

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS (1.1-12)

Paul, Silas and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing. Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring. All this is evidence that God's judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (14:12-24)

Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, "Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God."

Jesus replied: "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.' "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.' "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.' "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.' "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.' " 'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.' "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full. I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.' "

LITURGICAL CALENDAR

(From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)

St. Nicholas Of Myra, The Wonderworker
This Saturday, December 7, the Armenian Church remembers St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, a fourth century Bishop of Myra, Lycia in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). He was a defender of orthodoxy and because of many miracles attributed to his intercession he is called “the Wonderworker.” He was a secret and generous giver of gifts and some believe him to be the model for Santa Claus.

Eve Of The Fast Of St. James
This Sunday, December 8, is the eve (paregentan) of the Fast of St. James (Hagop) of Nisibus. This five-day fast, Monday to Friday, leads us to the Feast of St. James, which is next Saturday. Traditionally the entire fifty-day period of Advent was a period of fasting, similar to Great Lent. In modern times, three week-long (Monday to Friday) fasts are observed during Advent: Fast of Advent (Hisnagats Bahk), Fast of St. James (Sourp Hagopee Bahk), and the Fast of the Nativity (Dznuntyan Bahk).

Third Sunday Of Advent
This Sunday, December 8, is the third Sunday of Advent, a season of anticipation for the coming of Christ that gives us purpose to live in hope regardless of the many challenges and vicissitudes that face us. John the Baptist is the greatest Advent figure (read Matthew, Chapter 3 and Luke, Chapter 3). In the Armenian Church tradition this period of waiting is known as Hisnag —the fifty-day period that leads to the celebration of Christ’s Nativity and Epiphany on January 6.

Feast Of The Conception Of The Holy Virgin Mary
This Monday, December 9, is the Feast of the Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary. This is one of the eight feast days devoted to the Holy Virgin in the Armenian Church’s liturgical calendar. This feast is always celebrated on December 9 and is part of the Church’s preparation for Christmas. The faithful rejoice in the event that celebrates Mary’s conception in fulfillment of the prayers of her parents and who was nurtured to become the mother of the Messiah. Bible readings for this Feast are: Song of Songs 6:3-8; Malachi 3:1-2; Galatians 3:24-29; Luke 1:39-56.
