A Legacy of Truth: Remembering Siobhan Nash-Marshall’s Bond with the Armenian PeopleInch Ga Chga-Ի՞նչ Կայ Չկայ | - Saturday, December 21, 2024 I remember how mesmerized I was when I attended the screening of "The Lark Farm" in 2007 at the Italian consulate in New York City. My wife, Annie, and I experienced a whirlwind of emotions as we watched this Italian drama about the Armenian Genocide. At that moment, it never crossed my mind that fifteen years later, Antonia Arslan, the author of the best-selling novel “La Masseria delle Allodole”, from which the film is adapted, would be our dinner guest. If you’re wondering how Mrs. Arslan became our dinner guest, the answer is Professor Siobhan Nash Marshall. When I first met Dr. Siobhan in the late 2000s, my first question was, “How do you pronounce your name?” She asked, “How do you say 'rope' in Armenian?”

Simply Christmas - Our Much-Loved Annual Concert.Reported by Dr. Annita Nerses On Sunday, December 15, 2024, St. Sarkis revived our much-loved annual Simply Christmas concert. This concert is presented at no cost as an expression of appreciation for our community’s unwavering support of St. Sarkis throughout the year. This year’s concert featured a spectacular performance by Zulal, an a capella trio founded in 2002 by the talented Yeraz Markarian, Teni Apelian, and Anais Tekerian. The program featured lovely folk songs followed by a sing-a-long of Christmas carols with the entire audience. Over 150 attendees were enchanted by Zulal's rich harmonies and distinct vocal styles. They enjoyed ringing in the Christmas season by singing much-loved traditional carols with family and friends. We were honored to have His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian present as a special guest for this joyous occasion. Following the concert, attendees entered the beautifully decorated, sparkling Banquet Hall downstairs to enjoy a delicious luncheon of savory and sweet delights. The luncheon featured a very special surprise for our beloved Der Nareg in celebration of two significant milestones that had occurred over the last two months: the 20th anniversary of Der Hayr’s ordination into priesthood in October, followed by Der Hayr’s elevation to the rank of Archpriest (Avak Kahanah) on November 24th, 2024. As a token of our community’s appreciation for Der Nareg’s remarkable vision, vigor, passion, and commitment to his St. Sarkis parish, the Board of Trustees presented him with a hand-painted certificate of commemoration. Congratulations, Der Nareg! Thank you to Zulal and our talented organizing committee for ensuring everyone had a wonderful time. "Sages of All Ages" Christmas BrunchReported by Mrs. Liza Kabarajian The holiday season is a time for coming together, sharing joy, and creating cherished memories. On December 18, 2024, the Sages of All Ages group of St. Sarkis Church kicked off their festive celebrations with their first Christmas Brunch at Milleridge Inn. The brunch started around noon, with attendees arriving one by one, greeted by our beloved Zepiur Ardzivian, one of the founding members of this beautiful group. By 1 p.m., everyone was seated and already engaged in lively conversations. Our Prelate, His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian, and Father Nareg's presence highlighted the significance of community and faith during the season of goodwill. Their warm messages and blessings made the event even more special. As time passed and the Sages enjoyed a delicious brunch, the melodies of two talented musicians, Ms. Nevart Dadurian and Mr. Stephan Dadurian, filled the air with classic Christmas carols. Everyone joined in, singing along and embracing the magic of the season. The event became even more exciting when raffles were held, with some attendees winning beautifully curated prizes. The Christmas Brunch was a wonderful celebration of togetherness, friendship, and community spirit. Many attendees expressed their gratitude for the chance to celebrate with one another. Sages of all Ages are undoubtedly on the path to creating many more beautiful memories in the years ahead. A big thank you to the committee members for their efforts! Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY
THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE HEBREWS (1.1-14)
Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.' " And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work." And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest."
It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (19.11-28)
While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. 'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.' "But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.' "He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. "The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.' " 'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' "The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.' "His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.' "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.' "His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?'
"Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.' " 'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!' "He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away. But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them-bring them here and kill them in front of me."
After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

LITURGICAL CALENDAR(From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy) DAVID THE PROPHET KING; HOLY APOSTLE JAMESOn Monday, December 23, the Armenian Church commemorates David the Prophet King and the Holy Apostle James the Brother of the Lord. David was the youngest of eight brothers and was brought up to be a shepherd where he learned courage, tenderness, and caring. David became the second King of Israel. In the Bible, the name David belongs solely to him, which indicates the unique place he had as an ancestor and forerunner of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the New Testament there are more than 50 references to David, including the title given to Jesus—Son of David. David was a poet and is regarded as the author of the Book of Psalms. James the Apostle is called “Brother of the Lord.” Probably because of his close relationship with Jesus, he was granted a special appearance of the Lord after the Resurrection. He is believed to have been a first cousin of the Lord, or as some biblical scholars have suggested, a son of Joseph before his marriage to Mary. After the Ascension, while the other apostles scattered all over the world, James remained in Jerusalem where he served as the bishop and became a leading spokesman of the early church. James, the brother of the Lord (Acts 12:17; 15:13; 21:18; Galatians 1:19), was not one of the twelve apostles, the first bishop of Jerusalem.
ST. STEPHEN, FIRST DEACON AND FIRST MARTYROn Tuesday, December 24, the Armenian Church commemorates St. Stephen, the first deacon and proto martyr. After Christ’s ascension, the apostles went about spreading the Word. It soon became apparent that more people were needed to serve the growing church community. Seven worthy individuals were called upon to serve the Holy Altar and called “deacons” (sarkavag). The most noteworthy of the seven was Stephen, described as a “man full of faith and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5). The Feast of St. Stephen is a popular and important commemoration in the Armenian Church; it is a day to honor all deacons of the church. Stephen became the first martyr of the Church and is therefore called the “proto martyr.” The only information about his life and death is in the Book of Acts of the Apostles (Acts 6:8 and 8:2). You who were elected to serve, deserving of apostolic preaching, St. Stephen, intercede for us with Christ. You who beseeched forgiveness for those who stoned you, St. Stephen, now ask for the pilgrims on your behalf to the One who Sits on the right hand of the Father. You who became worthy of the first crown of martyrdom among all witnesses intercede for us with the crowner of the saints. |
