"I Feel Therefore I am"????

Pastor's Update #31 - Friday, November 22, 2024

Slideshow image

René Descartes' phrase "I think, therefore I am" (Cogito, ergo sum) is a foundational statement in modern Western philosophy. Theologically, it presents challenges due to its emphasis on subjectivity, skepticism, and the reduction of the human soul. However, what if Descartes' statement were "I feel, therefore I am"? What challenges might arise from a statement like that?

Our thoughts and feelings play a vital role in shaping our identity. When we cultivate healthy thinking patterns and develop the capacity to integrate our emotions, we can significantly improve our overall quality of life. On the other hand, when we grapple with distorted thoughts and fail to process our feelings, we may find ourselves struggling with chronic anxiety and depression. This contrast highlights the importance of nurturing a balanced mental and emotional state for our well-being.

Sages Of All Ages Thanksgiving Brunch

Sages Of All Ages Thanksgiving Brunch

Reported by Ms. Lori Varjabedian

On Wednesday, November 20th, St.Sarkis church hosted a wonderful Thanksgiving gathering for the “Sages of All Ages” group. Starting at 10:30 am, the room quickly filled as 60 eager women and men who look forward to this day - once a month - just for them. It was nice to look around the room to see everyone greet each other, meet new friends, set up tavloo games, grab a cup of coffee and a small bite and settle in as the day started. This month’s entertainment included a lovely piano and flute duet, Mrs. Nevart Dadourian & Mr. Stepan Dadourian. The familiar melodies they beautifully performed filled the air with feelings of nostalgia and brought smiles and singalongs to the impressed audience. The musical duo ended strong with a crowd favorite - Yervan Tartsadz. A delightful Thanksgiving feast lunch was then served. An abundance of homemade delicacies were prepared and served by the committee members of whom we are extremely blessed to have. Father Nareg blessed the table and gave his message to the room of believers. We are very thankful to have such a caring and personable priest at St. Sarkis church. We started our first course with a tasty Pumpkin soup. Mrs. Arpi Bezdikian cooked a tremendous turkey to ensure that the Sages truly have an authentic American traditional Thanksgiving meal. A lavish spread of side dishes accompanied the main dish, consisting of salad, sweet potatoes, stuffing, pilav, cranberry sauce & string beans. Shortly after lunch, Bingo cards and markers were handed out on the tables, and the games began. Our winners chose a gift from the bingo prize table which consisted of Thanksgiving themed potholder/towel sets & Bath & Bodyworks liquid hand soaps donated by Ms. Lori Varjabedian along with mini boxed cakes, festive cans of chocolate covered nuts & scratch off lotto tickets. After Bingo it was time for dessert - an extravagant array of homemade pies, cookies, tarts & a stunning artistic fruit display made by Mrs. Svetlana Indzhigulyan. We are so thankful for the committee members and dedicated volunteers who made this day possible and for our wonderful guests who enjoy attending this monthly event. Happy Thanksgiving!

Armenian Youth Foundation Supports Our School

Dear Parents,

The Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School of St. Sarkis Church is excited to announce that we have been awarded a $10,500 grant from the Armenian Youth Foundation (AYF) for the school’s capital improvements.

The Foundation’s mission is to preserve Armenian heritage by proudly supporting various youth programs. Since 1973, it has awarded over $780,000 in grants to over 20 organizations and Armenian schools. Visit ArmenianYouthFoundation.org to learn more about the Foundation's impact on our community and how you can support it.

With this grant award, we completed much-needed capital improvements to the school facilities, including installing new flooring, painting the walls, and purchasing new window blinds. The construction efforts were completed in time for the launch of the new school year in September. We have already seen the positive impact of these improvements in fostering a more inspiring learning environment.

We are very appreciative of the Armenian Youth Foundation's support of our mission. I also extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our parents, staff, and volunteers for entrusting us with the privilege of providing a productive and nurturing Armenian educational experience for your children. Thanks to your support, enrollment in our Saturday School, Parent & Me, and post-graduate Armenian studies programs has doubled from prior years. I am committed to working with each of you to ensure we provide an exceptional experience for our children.

With gratitude,

Yn. Annie Terterian, School Principal

Basketball News

Reported by Miss Carolina Guekjian

On Sunday, November 17th, the St. Sarkis Junior Boys Basketball Team took the court for their first game of the season, facing off against St. Leon in New Jersey. The team showcased remarkable energy and determination, setting the tone for an exciting season ahead.

The boys played outstanding defense, effectively shutting down several key plays from their opponents. Their ability to work together as a unit was equally impressive, with strong communication and teamwork evident throughout the game. While the outcome wasn't the primary focus, it's clear the team has the skills and spirit to achieve great things this season.

Congratulations to the St. Sarkis Junior Boys on a fantastic start! Keep up the hard work, we look forward cheering you on the games to come.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS (1.1-10)
Paul, Silas and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you.
We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia-your faith in God has become known everywhere.
Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead-Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (12.13-31)
Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?" Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."
Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? "Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

LITURGICAL CALENDAR

(From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)

PRESENTATION OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD TO THE TEMPLE

On Thursday, November 21, the Armenian Church commemorated the Presentation of the Holy Mother of God to the Temple (Undzayoum Sourp Asdvadzadzni), one of the eight feast days devoted to Mary in the Armenian liturgical calendar. The doctrine of the Holy Mother as “Mother-of-God” (Asdvadzamayr) and Bearer-of-God (Asdvadzadzin) was established in the fifth century at the Holy Ecumenical Council of Ephesus.

The Feast of the Presentation of the Holy Mother of God to the temple at the age of three is always commemorated on November 21. She remained in the house of God for twelve years, emerging at the age of fifteen with purity and wholesomeness. During her twelve years in the temple, she acquired the knowledge and religion of the greatest scholars, usually denied to female children in those days. The high priest entrusted with the care of Mary was Zachariah, the father of John the Baptist.

Thursday, November 21: Presentation of the Holy Mother of God to the Temple.
Saturday, November 23: Sts. Gregory the Wonder-worker, St. Nicholas, and Myron.
Monday, November 25: The Holy Virgins Juliana and Basilla.
