| Inch Ga Chga-Ի՞նչ Կայ Չկայ | Rediscovering Christmas: From Sacred Songs to Secular JoysWhy I Stopped Listening to 'Last Christmas'—And How It Won Me Back - Pastoral Reflections: Friday, December 13, 2024 I have grown weary of George Michael's "Last Christmas” over the years. This hit song, released in December 1984, was one of the few tracks that radio stations in Lebanon consistently played during the holiday season. Then, in the mid-90s, the German band Mr. President, known for their sound similar to Ace of Base, released a Christmas version of their hit song "Coco Jamboo," which slightly broadened the repertoire of Christmas music on the radio. ARS NY Erebouni Chapter Hosts Successful Christmas FundraiserSubmitted by NY Erebouni Reporter Roslyn, NY - On a crisp December afternoon, members, friends and supporters of the Armenian Relief Society NY Erebouni Chapter gathered together at Hendrick's Tavern for a Christmas Brunch at the Chapter's 4th Annual Marvelous & Merry Christmas Fundraiser. This year the event, which was held on December 7th, drew over 130 attendees who joined together to have some fun but mainly in order to raise funds for ARS Programs which include Lebanon and Syria as they endure this latest humanitarian crisis. After a warm welcome from event committee Chairperson Ungerouhi Garine Ferejian-Mayo, Erebouni Chapter Chairperson Vicky Hagobian was invited to address the gathering. She elaborated on the most recent activities of the ARS Eastern Region, highlighting it's massive outreach and assistance to the neediest communities over the past year. Ungerouhi Vicky expressed deep gratitude to the many guests for taking the time to attend and support the Chapter’s annual event. Throughout the afternoon guests found time to stroll over to the Christmas photo booth, enjoy the brunch cocktails and choose which baskets they'd hope to win with their raffles. Later, as a pleasant surprise during the brunch, talented violinist Diana Vasilyan entertained the guests. She played several favorite Armenian melodies and also included some popular Christmas carols for everyone's enjoyment as a sing along. The annual event met its goal of not only raising funds for the ARS but of also bringing a greater understanding of the ARS' mission to its guests. So much so that some of the attendees expressed interest in joining the Erebouni Chapter which was the perfect ending to a most delightful day for all. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Marvelous & Merry Committee members. The members were; Co-chairs Garine Ferejian-Mayo and Kristine Jamgotchian; Vicky Hagobian, Hilda Gorgissian, Madlen Hazarian, Jeanne Pidedjian, Janet Tutuyan, Sandra Vartanian, Aleene Voskerijian and Haigouhi Yepremian.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY
THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE HEBREWS (1.1-14) In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"? And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." In speaking of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire." But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy." He also says, "In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end." To which of the angels did God ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"? Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (17.1-10) Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. So watch yourselves. "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him." The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you. "Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'? Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'? Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'
LITURGICAL CALENDAR(From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy) ST. JACOB OF NISIBISThis Saturday, December 16, is the Feast of St. Jacob (Hagop) of Nisibis (Mdzbin). He was born and died in the city of Nisibis, located in what is now southeastern Turkey, an important early Christian center in Asia Minor and a transit point of the caravans traveling east and west. He was ordained Bishop of Nisibis in 320. He participated in the first ecumenical council in Nicaea (325), where he earned great respect from the Emperor Constantine and the other attendees. St. Jacob sought to find Noah’s Ark as proof for skeptics. On the eve of his ascent to the summit, an angel appeared and told him that he need not climb to the summit and gave him a piece of the Ark. The piece is kept at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Jacob is one of the most beloved saints in the Armenian Church. He is also honored by the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Coptic Church, and the Eastern Catholic and Roman Catholic Churches. “The heavenly hosts rejoiced at the greatness of your feats by which you in the flesh became like the angels on high; we have you as intercessor for us before the Father in heaven. And we with a joyful voice celebrate your holy memory, O venerable witness of Christ, holy father James; we have you as intercessory for us before the Father in heaven. You decided on severe toils to see Noah’s Ark and from the angel’s hand received a portion of the wood which served the human race as salvation; we have you as intercessor for us before the Father in heaven.” |
