St. Sarkis Church Summer CampJuly 24, 2015The tenth season of St. Sarkis Summer Camp was a season to remember. This season boasted with over 85 campers and nearly 30 staff members. With great appreciation to our sponsors and dedicated staff for an exciting schedule of activities, three fun and memorable weeks were meticulously planned and executed for the enjoyment of all the campers. There were many new additions to our tenth season. For the first time, we have extended the session to three weeks from the usual two week session. We have also included more activities and fun and exciting trips throughout each summer day!
News From Group A ( Pre- School Age) Group A enjoyed many fun activities this season. Some activities that Group A encountered were music, dancing, arts and crafts, sports, and playing games. They sang and danced to Armenian songs. They also learned Armenian recitations. Campers took part in Armenian conversation and letter recognition activities. Some arts and crafts that they did consisted of making butterflies, scarecrows, magic wands from beads, and pipe cleaners, paper dolls, fray puppets from construction paper and , as well as batman cuffs. They played many fun activities for sports such as Parachute. Popcorn, Red Light Green Light and Duck Duck Goose. The teachers for Group A were: Ms. Nayda Voskerijian, Mrs. Salpi Megherian, Miss Aleene Voskerijian, and Miss Debbie Agopian. News From Group B ( Kindergarten- First Grade) Group B also enjoyed many similar activities. Some activities they enjoyed were making mosaics, abstract bead art, tie dye shirts, and paper mache. They also learned word families, art through literacy, Armenian conversation, and participated in reading aloud during center time. Group B also took part in religion discussions with Der Nareg and learned about various biblical passages. During Sports Group B played intense games of Dodgeball and Soccer. The teachers for Group B were: Mrs. Yvette, Miss Corina, Miss Tatev, Miss Julieta, Miss Arev, Miss Marina. News From Group C ( Second Grade - Sixth Grade) Group C took part in various fun and creative art projects this summer. They made creations of tissue paper art on canvas, Tie Dye T shirts, Beaded necklaces, keychains, homemade play dough, Armenian flags. They also designed clay crosses , popsicle fish art, lanyards and paper mache crafts. Campers experimented with various topics such as Celery Science. During Sports they enjoyed Dodgeball, Soccer, Basketball and Circle Tag. The teachers for Group C were: Mrs. Sonya and Mrs. Jeanette. News From Group D (Seventh Grade - Eleventh Grade) Group D, the oldest group, had a unique camp season. The majority of the campers have been attending this camp since the first year it opened. Some activities they enjoyed were sports, arts and crafts, and having discussions with Der Nareg. Some sports Group D played were dodgeball, football, and basketball. They made clay crosses and painted boards. During the discussions with Der Nareg they talked about their personalities, their future, being part of the Armenian community, and forgiveness. Group D campers took part in creating an informative webcast for the community, where they filmed and interviewed many individuals and activities revolving around the Summer Camp. The teacher for Group D was Mr. Levon. There were an abundant number of choices for each camper this season. Group A and B enjoyed the Fun Bus on Friday afternoons, they also enjoyed a Puppet Show production of Goldilocks. All groups enjoyed Karate by Master Joe of NYCBB, Drama with Mrs. Lara Bardizbanian, Soccer with Mr. Razmik Nenejian and Mr. Raffi Nenejian, Altar Server Training with Mr. Bedig Kalajian, Sports with Mr. Christapor Megherian, Music with Mrs. Zepiur Ardzivian, Health Education with Mrs. Nyeree Demirjan and Health and Yoga with Mrs. Lena Felice. A special Magic Show by John Born was also a treat for our campers this final week. Groups B through D enjoyed the Minion film at Douglaston Movieworld and groups C and D also enjoyed Mini-Golf during the weeks Der Nareg held Church service and religious studies for all groups. On the last day of Summer Camp, campers attended a brief service followed by communion. We would like to thank all the hard working and dedicated teachers and staff who dedicated their time and expertise to fulfil these three amazing weeks. We also greatly thank our sponsors, Mr. Antranig Boudakian, Mrs. Makrouhi Kalaydjian, Mrs. Siran Saroyan, Mr. and Mrs. Berdj and Hilda Agopian, Armen and Mimi Bijimenian, for believing in our program and helping it flourish through these years. We are thankful also to Mr and Mrs. Harout and Nayri Khatchadourian for donating this year's fabulous T-shirts to our Summer Camp.
